iPadOS 27.2: New Features, Release Date and Supported iPads
Apple's iPadOS 27.2 beta 2 is out for developers, with a reworked EU tracking prompt, the Health app's Insights tab and no release date yet.

Apple is testing iPadOS 27.2, the first feature update to iPadOS 27, and the company's own documentation now confirms part of what is inside it. The newest build seeded to developers is iPadOS 27.2 beta 2 (24B5089g), released on September 21, 2026, and Apple's release notes for that build confirm a reworked App Tracking Transparency prompt for European Union users, plus the presence of the Health app's new Insights tab. Apple has not announced a public release date, and as of October 1 no third developer beta has appeared on Apple's developer releases feed.
Key facts
- Current build: iPadOS 27.2 beta 2, build 24B5089g, seeded September 21, 2026 alongside iOS 27.2 beta 2 with the same build number.
- Confirmed by Apple: an alternative expanded App Tracking Transparency prompt with yearly re-prompting for EU users, required in France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Romania.
- Also referenced in Apple's notes: the Health app's Insights tab and the Shortcuts "Describe a Shortcut" flow, both listed under known issues.
- No iPadOS 27.1: Apple's developer releases feed goes straight from the 27.0 cycle to 27.2 betas for iPhone and iPad.
- Release date: not announced by Apple. The most recent shipping build for iPad is iPadOS 27.0.1 (24A446), released September 28, 2026.
What Apple has actually confirmed about iPadOS 27.2
There is a useful distinction to draw here, because point-release betas generate a lot of coverage based on what testers find rather than on what Apple says. The company does not issue a press release for an x.2 update, so the authoritative document is the iOS and iPadOS 27.2 release notes on the Apple Developer site, which were last revised on September 30, 2026.
Those notes are short, and they are written for developers rather than shoppers, but they are specific. Under a new App Tracking Transparency heading, Apple states that the AppTrackingTransparency framework "now supports an alternative expanded prompt and re-prompting on a yearly basis for EU users," and that the alternative prompt "is required for users in France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Romania." That is a regulatory change with real consequences for anyone who uses an iPad in those five countries, and it is the single clearest new feature Apple itself has put on the record for this release.
The rest of the document is made up of known issues and fixes. Apple lists a Health entry warning that "personalized summaries may not generate as expected in the Insights tab," a Shortcuts entry noting that "Describe a Shortcut" might fail with an error, and a run of StoreKit testing fixes covering intro offer eligibility resets, storefront changes propagating through Storefront updates, and error dialogs appearing in test sessions when they should be suppressed.
Those known issues matter for a reason that is easy to miss: a bug report only exists if the feature exists. Apple naming the Insights tab in a 27.2 document is the company's own acknowledgement that the reworked Health experience is part of this update cycle rather than a later one.
The Health app's Insights tab turns up in Apple's own notes
Apple previewed a rebuilt Health app in September 2026, built around Apple Intelligence, with a tab that surfaces personalized summaries of health data and a longevity-focused view that compares a person's measurements against their chronological age. At the time, Apple said the redesign would arrive later in the year on Apple Intelligence devices in US English rather than shipping with the 27.0 releases.
The 27.2 release notes are the first time the Insights tab appears in Apple's shipping documentation for a specific software version. Developers testing the beta report that the full redesign, including the longevity view, is present in these builds; Apple has not published a feature-level breakdown of the Health changes for 27.2, so the detail beyond the Insights tab reference should be treated as beta-build observation rather than a confirmed final feature list.
That caveat is worth keeping. Features move between point releases, and Apple has pulled or delayed Apple Intelligence functionality before. On iPad specifically, the Health app is also a newer arrival than it is on iPhone, so the redesign carries more weight for iPad owners than a typical app refresh.
The EU tracking prompt change explained
App Tracking Transparency is the permission sheet that appears when an app wants to track you across other companies' apps and websites. Since iOS 14.5 it has been a single, one-time choice per app. The 27.2 change does two things in the European Union: it introduces an alternative, expanded version of that prompt, and it makes the system ask again on a yearly basis rather than treating the first answer as permanent.
Apple's notes make the expanded prompt mandatory for users in five member states — France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Romania — which lines up with the countries where national competition authorities have scrutinised how Apple presents the choice. For everyone else in the EU, the expanded prompt is supported rather than required.
In practical terms, iPad owners in those countries should expect to see tracking requests resurface for apps they answered months or years ago. Developers, meanwhile, have to plan for consent decaying over time instead of being a one-off event, which changes how measurement and attribution behave for EU audiences.
Where the beta cycle stands as of October 1
Apple's developer releases feed is the cleanest public record of what has actually shipped, and it tells a tidy story for this cycle.
| Build | Version | Released | Audience |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24A446 | iPadOS 27.0.1 | September 28, 2026 | Public, all supported iPads |
| 23H30 | iPadOS 26.7.1 | September 28, 2026 | Public, older iPads staying on iPadOS 26 |
| 24B5089g | iPadOS 27.2 beta 2 | September 21, 2026 | Developer beta |
| 24B5089g | iOS 27.2 beta 2 | September 21, 2026 | Developer beta |
| 27B5028f | Xcode 27.2 beta 2 | September 28, 2026 | Developers |
Two details stand out. First, iPadOS and iOS 27.2 share a build number, which is normal for Apple's phone and tablet releases and means the two platforms are moving together. Second, Xcode 27.2 beta 2 arrived a week after the operating system betas, on the same day Apple shipped the 27.0.1 bug-fix updates — a sign the toolchain is still catching up with the OS branch rather than a hint that a release is imminent.
Why there is no iPadOS 27.1
Apple's releases feed lists no iOS or iPadOS 27.1 developer beta at all. It shows the 27.0 releases on September 14, then 27.2 betas from September 21, then the 27.0.1 maintenance updates on September 28. An Xcode 27.1 beta did appear on September 18, which is why the version number exists in Apple's tooling even though no matching iPad release has been seeded.
Apple has not explained the gap, and anything beyond the feed itself is inference. The practical read for iPad owners is simply that the next feature update to land on your tablet will be labelled 27.2, not 27.1, and that skipping a number says nothing about how large the update is.
Which iPads can run iPadOS 27 and 27.2
Point releases do not change hardware support, so the compatibility list for iPadOS 27.2 is the same one Apple published for iPadOS 27 in its official download guide on September 16, 2026.
| Family | Supported for iPadOS 27 | Apple Intelligence features |
|---|---|---|
| iPad Pro | 4th generation and later (M1 and later) | Yes, on M1 and later |
| iPad Air | 4th generation and later (M2 and later) | Yes, on M1 and later |
| iPad | 9th generation and later (A16) | No |
| iPad mini | 6th generation and A17 Pro model | A17 Pro model only |
The split in that third column is the one that catches people out. An iPad can be fully supported for iPadOS 27 and still miss most of what the 27.x cycle is being built around, because Apple's requirements for the next generation of Apple Intelligence are stricter than the requirements for the operating system itself.
What you need for the Apple Intelligence parts
Apple's Apple Intelligence support document sets out the requirements plainly: the next generation of Apple Intelligence is available on iPad models with M1 or later, and it arrives automatically on eligible devices when you update to the 27.0 software releases. Apple lists the iPad mini (A17 Pro) separately as an eligible device.
Storage matters too. Apple says the features need up to 14GB of on-device storage on iPad models with M4 or later that have at least 12GB of unified memory, and up to 8GB on other eligible iPads. Your device language and Siri language also have to be set to the same supported language, and Apple warns that changing the Siri language can make Apple Intelligence temporarily unavailable until the new language pack finishes downloading.
On languages, Apple currently supports Apple Intelligence in English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), Japanese and Korean. Siri AI, the rebuilt assistant that headlines Apple's iPadOS 27 overview page, is a narrower case: Apple describes it as available in beta in iPadOS 27 and rolling out in English. Testers have found additional Siri languages in the 27.2 builds, but Apple's own language documentation has not yet been updated to list them, so that one stays in the unconfirmed column for now.
One feature Apple does describe publicly is Suggestions. On its Apple Intelligence page, the company says Messages and Mail "offer suggestions to help you take quick actions based on context from your conversation — add a calendar event or search for a photo with just a tap," and marks it as available in English. If you are on an eligible iPad running 27.0.1 today, that is already live; it is not something you need 27.2 to get.
Known issues worth knowing before you install
Apple's notes for beta 2 list three active problems. Health's personalized summaries may not generate as expected in the Insights tab — which, given the Health redesign is the most interesting thing in this release, is the one most likely to affect day-to-day use. Shortcuts users may see "Describe a Shortcut" fail with a generic "Something went wrong. Try again later." error. And developers working with subscription bundles may find that an in-app purchase for a bundled subscription incorrectly allows unbundling rather than throwing an error.
Apple also lists fixes in beta 2, all on the StoreKit testing side: intro offer eligibility now resets immediately after clearing test transactions, storefront and locale changes made in a test session now propagate correctly, and failed test purchases no longer display error dialogs when dialogs are disabled. None of that affects normal use of an iPad, but it is a reasonable indicator that this beta cycle is in cleanup mode rather than still absorbing large new features.
Should you install the beta on your iPad?
For most people, no. The headline reason to be on 27.2 early is the Health redesign, and Apple's own notes say the marquee part of it — the personalized summaries in the Insights tab — may not generate reliably in this build. The App Tracking Transparency change is important but it is not something you would install a beta to experience.
If your iPad is your main machine, the stable path is iPadOS 27.0.1, which Apple released on September 28 and which is the current shipping build for every supported model. Apple's download guide also covers turning on automatic updates, so the final 27.2 release will install overnight without you watching for it. For a refresher on what landed in the 27.0 cycle across Apple's platforms, our rundown of the iOS 27 launch covers the same feature set from the iPhone side, since the two releases share most of their Apple Intelligence work.
If you do want on the beta, the enrolment path is the same as it has been: the developer beta appears in Settings once your Apple Account is enrolled, and Apple's guidance on backing up before updating applies with more force than usual on a device that holds health data.
How this compares with the rest of the autumn update season
Apple is not the only platform mid-cycle right now. Google's Android 17 reached stable earlier in the year and has been expanding through device makers since; our guide to Android 17's rollout and feature set tracks that side. Samsung, meanwhile, is staging its own Android 17-based release across Galaxy hardware, as our One UI 9 rollout tracker documents.
The contrast in approach is instructive. Samsung and Google publish device lists and phased schedules because their updates have to clear carriers and regional certification. Apple ships to every supported iPad at once, which removes the waiting-list problem entirely but also means Apple says very little in advance — there is no official iPadOS 27.2 schedule to point at, only a beta feed that moves when it moves.
What's next
The next concrete milestone is a third developer beta. Apple seeded beta 2 on September 21 and has not posted another OS beta in the ten days since, while continuing to ship point fixes on the 27.0 branch. Historically, an update at this stage of testing is weeks rather than months away, and tech-press expectations point to a release later in October — but Apple has published no date, and nothing in the company's own documentation commits to one.
Three things are worth watching. Whether Apple updates its Apple Intelligence language documentation, which would confirm the additional Siri languages testers have found. Whether the Health Insights known issue clears in a later beta, since that is the feature most likely to define how this update is received. And whether the expanded tracking prompt stays limited to the five named EU countries or widens before release, which would make 27.2 a bigger deal for European iPad owners than its version number suggests.
We will update this article when Apple seeds the next beta or publishes a release date.
Frequently asked questions
When is iPadOS 27.2 coming out?
Apple has not announced a release date. As of October 1, 2026, the newest build seeded to developers is iPadOS 27.2 beta 2 (24B5089g), released on September 21, and no third beta has appeared on Apple's developer releases feed. The current shipping version for iPad is iPadOS 27.0.1, released September 28.
What is new in iPadOS 27.2?
The change Apple documents itself is an alternative expanded App Tracking Transparency prompt with yearly re-prompting for EU users, required in France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Romania. Apple's release notes also reference the Health app's Insights tab and the Shortcuts 'Describe a Shortcut' flow, both under known issues.
Why was there no iPadOS 27.1?
Apple's developer releases feed lists no iOS or iPadOS 27.1 beta. It goes from the 27.0 releases on September 14 to the 27.2 betas on September 21, with 27.0.1 maintenance updates on September 28. An Xcode 27.1 beta did ship on September 18, but no matching iPad release was seeded. Apple has not explained the gap.
Which iPads support iPadOS 27.2?
The same models that support iPadOS 27: iPad Pro 4th generation and later (M1 and later), iPad Air 4th generation and later (M2 and later), iPad 9th generation and later (A16), and iPad mini 6th generation and the A17 Pro model. Point releases do not change hardware support.
Do I need a new iPad for the Apple Intelligence features?
You need an iPad with M1 or later, or the iPad mini with A17 Pro. Apple also requires up to 14GB of free storage on M4 or later iPads with at least 12GB of unified memory, up to 8GB on other eligible models, and your device and Siri languages set to the same supported language.
Should I install the iPadOS 27.2 beta?
Most people should not. Apple's own notes flag that personalized summaries may not generate as expected in the Health app's Insights tab, which is the main reason to want the update early. iPadOS 27.0.1 is the stable build, and the final 27.2 release will install automatically if you have automatic updates turned on.
