iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: Every Difference, Compared

The iPhone 18 Pro keeps the iPhone 17 Pro’s size, 6.3-inch display and aluminum unibody. What changes is inside: the A20 Pro chip, a main camera with variable aperture, a bigger vapor chamber, faster wired charging, Apple’s C2 modem and about three hours more video playback. It also costs $100 more, starting at $1,199 for 256GB against the iPhone 17 Pro’s $1,099 launch price.

That makes this an unusual upgrade year for Apple’s Pro phones. In 2025 the iPhone 17 Pro brought a new aluminum design, an 8x optical-quality telephoto and a new vapor chamber. The iPhone 18 Pro keeps almost all of that and focuses on the camera, the chip and the battery. The comparison below is built from Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro technical specifications and its iPhone 17 Pro tech specs, with Pro Max figures where they differ. Performance and battery figures are Apple’s own claims unless stated otherwise.

How much more does the iPhone 18 Pro cost?

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro announcement puts the starting price at $1,199, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299. When the iPhone 17 Pro was announced in September 2025, it started at $1,099 and the 17 Pro Max at $1,199. Both base models start at 256GB, so the increase is a straight $100 on each model at the entry level.

The smaller Pro also gains a 2TB option this year. Last year that capacity was limited to the 17 Pro Max. For anyone upgrading, Apple Trade In currently offers $175 to $885 in credit for an iPhone 13 or later, and Apple says some carriers offer up to $1,200 in credits for an iPhone 14 or later, in any condition. What your own phone is worth depends on its model and condition, which you can check on Apple’s trade-in page.

Design and display: nearly identical

If you put the two phones side by side screen-up, the only visible difference is the Dynamic Island. Both have a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display at the same resolution, with ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On, 1600 nits HDR peak, 3000 nits outdoor peak, and a 1-nit minimum. Both use Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back, and both carry an IP68 rating.

Apple says it redesigned the Dynamic Island on the 18 Pro “using advanced display technology” so it takes up less space and can show up to three Live Activities at once. Face ID still sits inside it. The bodies have identical measurements, 71.9 x 150.0 x 8.75 mm, though Apple sells a separate case range for each model. The 18 Pro is 5 grams heavier, at 211 g.

The finishes give it away. The 18 Pro comes in black, silver, glacier (a pale blue) and a new burgundy. The 17 Pro came in silver, cosmic orange and deep blue.

Performance: A20 Pro vs A19 Pro

Apple says A20 Pro is built on a 2-nanometer process with 50 percent more memory bandwidth than A19 Pro. The GPU grows from six cores to seven and is up to 40 percent faster, according to Apple. The Neural Engine becomes a “Dual 16-core” design with 32 cores in total, which Apple says doubles A19 Pro’s AI processing power. The CPU keeps six cores, but Apple now calls the two fast cores “super cores” and says the CPU has integrated Neural Accelerators.

The bigger practical change may be cooling. Apple says A20 Pro uses packaging inspired by its M-series chips, placing memory beside the silicon rather than in the thermal path, so the chip can attach directly to a new vapor chamber with three times the surface area of the iPhone 17 Pro’s. Apple claims up to a 40 percent gain in sustained performance over the previous generation. That matters most for long gaming sessions, 4K video recording and on-device AI. These are Apple’s figures; independent sustained-load tests will show how much of that holds in practice.

For everyday use such as messaging, browsing and social apps, the A19 Pro is not short of power, so the upgrade matters most to people who push their phone hard.

Camera: variable aperture is the headline

The biggest camera change is on the 48MP Fusion Main camera. The iPhone 17 Pro’s main lens has a fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture. The iPhone 18 Pro uses six laser-cut blades to switch between four apertures: ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0. Apple says it chooses the aperture automatically. It opens up to ƒ/1.48 in low light and narrows to ƒ/4 to keep more of a group photo in focus. You can also set the aperture yourself, and Apple has opened it to developers through an API.

Related changes on the 18 Pro:

• New sensor and imaging pipeline on the main camera, which Apple says improves low-light shots and detail.
• Pro controls in the Camera app for aperture, shutter speed, white balance and a live histogram, on both rear and front cameras (the front camera has no aperture control).
• Apple Reference Image, a new Reference mode that captures signed sensor data. Private Cloud Compute turns that data into an unalterable reference photo stored alongside the main image, so you can show whether a picture was edited.
• Video upgrades: Cinematic mode goes from 4K at 30 fps to 4K at 60 fps, and you can apply Cinematic effects after you shoot. Time-lapse now records in 4K Dolby Vision, and digital zoom in video reaches 24x instead of 15x.

The rest of the camera system is the same. Both phones have a 48MP Ultra Wide and a 48MP tetraprism telephoto at 4x with an 8x optical-quality crop, giving 16x optical-quality zoom range and up to 40x digital zoom for photos. The front cameras are the same 18MP Center Stage units. Pro video features such as ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and genlock were already on the 17 Pro.

Battery life and charging

Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback, three more than the iPhone 17 Pro’s 33. It also rates the 18 Pro for up to 24 hours of “typical use” under a new usage model based on real-world data. Apple does not publish that figure for the 17 Pro, so the two cannot be compared on it. The Pro Max gap is larger: 45 hours of video playback on the 18 Pro Max versus 39 on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Apple calls this the largest battery life increase ever on an iPhone. The 18 Pro Max is also heavier, at 249 g versus 233 g.

Wired charging is faster. The 18 Pro reaches 50 percent in about 15 minutes with a 60W-capable adapter, compared with 20 minutes for the 17 Pro on a 40W adapter. On the 18 Pro Max, Apple says five minutes of wired charging gives about seven hours of video playback. MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging stay at up to 25W, and both phones reach 50 percent in about 30 minutes that way.

Apple’s battery figures are for eSIM-only models. The iPhone 18 Pro is eSIM-only in the U.S., Canada, Japan, Mexico and eight other markets, and Apple says those versions get about two extra hours of video playback compared with physical-SIM models sold elsewhere.

Connectivity: Apple’s C2 modem arrives

Both phones use Apple’s N1 wireless chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. The iPhone 18 Pro adds Apple’s own C2 cellular modem. Apple says it delivers meaningfully faster uploads than its earlier C1X modem while using 15 percent less energy, and that it supports mmWave 5G in the U.S. The iPhone 17 Pro’s spec sheet does not list an Apple modem. Apple has not published a head-to-head network comparison between the two phones.

Software and AI: less of a gap than you might think

Both phones run iOS 27, and both get Siri AI and the full set of Apple Intelligence features. Apple’s support list includes every iPhone 16 model or later, plus the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. So the new Siri, Write with Siri, Siri mode in Camera, and the new Photos tools (Spatial Reframing, Extend and the upgraded Clean Up) are not reasons to upgrade by themselves. The A20 Pro’s larger Neural Engine may run on-device models faster, but Apple has not said any current Apple Intelligence feature is exclusive to the 18 Pro. The exceptions are the features tied to its new hardware, such as variable aperture and Apple Reference Image.

Should you upgrade from the iPhone 17 Pro to the iPhone 18 Pro?

Most iPhone 17 Pro owners can skip this generation. You already have the same screen, the same body, the same telephoto and ultra-wide cameras, the same front camera, and the same iOS 27 AI features. For a one-year-old phone, the extras on the 18 Pro don’t add up to a compelling reason to switch: about three hours more video playback, five minutes faster wired charging and a stronger sustained-performance claim.

Upgrade if you shoot a lot with the main camera and want optical depth-of-field control without switching to Portrait mode, or you need Apple Reference Image for journalism or verification work. It is also worth it if you play demanding games or record long 4K clips where sustained performance counts, or if you want 2TB of storage in the smaller Pro.

Coming from an iPhone 16 Pro or older? Then the 18 Pro is the easier choice. You would gain the 8x optical-quality telephoto, the 18MP Center Stage front camera and the vapor-chamber design introduced with the 17 Pro, plus everything new this year.
