What is new in GeForce driver 617.14?
Driver 617.14 is a Game Ready release, which means its headline purpose is to ship Nvidia’s tuning for a batch of upcoming games before they launch. According to Nvidia’s Game Ready announcement for 617.14, the driver “includes optimizations and enhancements for four new, upcoming, highly anticipated games”: AION 2, CONTROL Resonant, Gears of War: E-Day and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered.
All four games lean heavily on Nvidia’s RTX feature stack. Nvidia lists DLSS 4.5 support across the set, path tracing in CONTROL Resonant and The Witcher 3 remaster, and RTX Mega Geometry in Gears of War: E-Day. That makes this a driver worth installing for anyone planning to play those titles in the next two weeks, even if their current driver is working fine.
Under the hood, the official 617.14 release notes (PDF) list the bundled software module versions as CUDA 13.4, PhysX System Software 9.26.0703, HD Audio Driver 1.4.6.3 and DCH NVIDIA Control Panel 8.1.969.0. Nvidia describes the wider Release 615 family, which covers driver versions 615.xx to 619.xx, as adding CUDA 13.4 support along with “the latest performance improvements, bug fixes, and driver enhancements.” The notes also state that with 617.14, Nvidia’s OpenCL driver now uses the newer Clang and NVVM 7.0-based compiler by default, replacing the old JIT compiler — a change that matters mostly to developers and compute users rather than gamers.
Which games get Game Ready support?
The four titles land over a roughly two-week window, which is why Nvidia bundled them into one driver. The dates below are the ones Nvidia gives in its driver article.
| Game | Release date (per Nvidia) | Nvidia RTX features listed |
|---|---|---|
| CONTROL Resonant | September 24, 2026 | Path tracing, DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation |
| The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered | September 29, 2026 (free upgrade) | Path tracing, LSS path-traced hair, DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation |
| AION 2 (global) | September 30 (Founder’s Pack), October 5 (free-to-play) | DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution, Multi Frame Generation |
| Gears of War: E-Day | October 1 (Early Access), October 6 (full release) | Ray tracing (Lumen, MegaLights), RTX Mega Geometry, DLSS Super Resolution, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, Reflex |
CONTROL Resonant
Remedy’s sequel launched on September 24 with path tracing and DLSS 4.5 from day one. Nvidia says the game takes the original CONTROL’s ray-traced effects further “with more advanced path-traced effects, DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation.” The story moves the series to a ravaged Manhattan and puts players in control of Dylan Faden, brother of FBC Director Jesse Faden. Nvidia is also running a GeForce RTX 50 Series bundle that includes a Steam copy of the game with qualifying RTX 5090, 5080, 5070 Ti or 5070 desktops, graphics cards and laptops at participating retailers; the company says the offer runs until September 29 while supplies last.
Gears of War: E-Day
The Coalition’s prequel is built on Unreal Engine 5 and DirectX 12. Nvidia’s article says the game uses the engine’s MegaLights system to render ray-traced shadows from up to 100 light sources, and Lumen for ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion. The Nvidia-specific addition is RTX Mega Geometry, which Nvidia says enables “accurate ray tracing of Nanite geometry for the very first time,” producing more detailed objects, more accurate reflections and extra ray-traced shadowing. Nvidia also says Nanite raises object detail “by up to 100X in comparison to Gears 5.” If you are planning your launch week, our guide to Gears of War: E-Day’s release date, Early Access and editions covers which edition unlocks the October 1 start.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered
CD Projekt Red’s remaster arrives as a free upgrade on September 29. Beyond gameplay changes — Nvidia lists a reimagined skill system, overhauled animations, improved combat, cross-platform mod support and an expanded photo mode — the PC version adds path tracing, including line swept sphere (LSS) path-traced hair that builds on the game’s original HairWorks tech. DLSS Super Resolution moves to version 4.5, and Nvidia says Dynamic Multi Frame Generation “will allow up to 6X frame multiplication on GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs.”
AION 2
NC’s Unreal Engine 5 MMORPG, which launched last year in Korea and Taiwan, goes global on September 30 for Founder’s Pack buyers before a full free-to-play release on October 5. Nvidia says the global version will support DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation.
What bugs does 617.14 fix?
The fixed-issues list is short but targeted at problems that appeared after users moved to the R615 branch. According to the release notes, 617.14 resolves:
- Game launch failures: Judgment, Lost Judgment and Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. “may fail to launch after updating to driver 616.56.” (Nvidia bug 6681537)
- Samsung Odyssey G95NC over HDMI: no picture on the monitor when connected via HDMI after updating to R615 drivers. (bug 6771206)
- DisplayPort sleep: “Certain monitors may not wake from sleep when connected via DisplayPort after updating to R615 drivers.” (bug 6757568)
If you rolled back to an older driver because of a dark screen on wake, 617.14 is the build to try next. The previous Game Ready driver, 616.92, released on September 9, was the one that brought Game Ready support for 007 First Light’s path tracing update.
Known issues you should know about
Nvidia lists one open gaming issue in 617.14: Assassin’s Creed Shadows “may crash to desktop after extended gameplay after updating to driver 616.56” (bug 6685219). There is no workaround in the notes, so players who hit that crash regularly may prefer to stay on a pre-616.56 driver until Nvidia marks it fixed.
The release notes also repeat long-standing limitations that are not new to this build, including possible conflicts between in-game HDR settings and Windows HDR settings, and a note that video colour settings in the NVIDIA Control Panel no longer apply to Microsoft apps such as the Media Player and Edge, a change dating back to driver 526.47.
| Status | Issue | Nvidia bug ID |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed | Judgment / Lost Judgment / Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. may fail to launch | 6681537 |
| Fixed | No picture on Samsung Odyssey G95NC via HDMI on R615 | 6771206 |
| Fixed | Some DisplayPort monitors do not wake from sleep on R615 | 6757568 |
| Open | Assassin’s Creed Shadows may crash to desktop after extended gameplay | 6685219 |
Which GeForce GPUs does 617.14 support?
The supported-products tables in the release notes start at Turing. On desktop, that means the GeForce GTX 1630, 1650, 1650 SUPER, 1660, 1660 SUPER and 1660 Ti, the whole RTX 20 series (plus the TITAN RTX), and every RTX 30, RTX 40 and RTX 50 series card up to the RTX 5090 and the China-market RTX 5090 D and 5090 D v2. On laptops, the list runs from the GeForce MX450, GTX 1650 and GTX 1660 Ti up to the RTX 5090 Laptop GPU.
What is missing is just as important: GeForce GTX 10-series (Pascal) and GTX 900-series (Maxwell) cards do not appear in the 617.14 support tables. If you own one of those cards, the Game Ready driver installer is not for you, and new game-specific optimisations such as the ones in this release will not reach your GPU. Not sure which card is in your PC? Windows Task Manager’s Performance tab and the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag) both show the exact model name.
| Architecture | Desktop GPUs in 617.14 support list | Laptop GPUs in 617.14 support list |

The driver supports Windows 11 and 64-bit Windows 10 (version 1803 and later, according to the notes). If you are still running Windows 10, see our explainer on keeping Windows 11 current before support deadlines for the broader update picture.
DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction: why it matters for these games
Three of the four Game Ready titles use DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction or DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution, so it is worth knowing what changed. Nvidia made DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction available at Gamescom on August 25, describing it as a “2nd generation transformer model” that replaces traditional hand-tuned denoisers in ray-traced and path-traced scenes. It runs on all GeForce RTX GPUs.
Nvidia’s own claims for the new model are:
- More capacity at similar cost: 35% more compute capability and 20% more parameters “while maintaining similar performance to the previous model.”
- Better super resolution: deeper spatial awareness and smarter use of engine sampling and motion data, which Nvidia says improves lighting accuracy, temporal stability and motion clarity.
- A larger training dataset and finer developer control over temporal accumulation.
Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, which appears in CONTROL Resonant, Gears of War: E-Day and the Witcher 3 remaster, is a GeForce RTX 50 Series feature. Owners of RTX 20, 30 and 40 series cards still get Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction, but not multi-frame generation. These are vendor claims; independent image-quality comparisons will vary by game and settings.
How to download and install GeForce 617.14
There are two official routes. Both deliver the same WHQL-certified package.
Option 1: The NVIDIA app
- Open the NVIDIA app (install it from Nvidia’s site if you do not have it).
- Go to the Drivers tab and make sure Game Ready Driver is selected rather than Studio Driver.
- Click Download next to version 617.14, then Express Installation. The screen may flicker or go black briefly while the display driver swaps.
- Restart if prompted.
Option 2: Manual download
- Visit Nvidia’s GeForce driver download page.
- Choose your product series, product and operating system, and select the Game Ready driver type.
- Download the 617.14 package and run the installer. Choose Custom and tick Perform a clean installation if you have been having display problems.
Nvidia’s release notes warn that uninstalling drivers through Device Manager is not supported, so use the installer or Windows’ Installed apps list if you need to roll back. If you run into a problem specific to 617.14, Nvidia asks users to post details on the GeForce.com driver feedback forum.
Should you update to 617.14?
For most RTX owners, yes. If you plan to play CONTROL Resonant, Gears of War: E-Day, The Witcher 3 remaster or AION 2 this autumn, this is the driver those games were tuned against. It is also the right move if your DisplayPort monitor has been failing to wake from sleep, or if you own a Samsung Odyssey G95NC connected over HDMI, because those R615 regressions are now fixed.
The main reason to wait is Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Nvidia still lists crashes after long sessions as an open issue that began with driver 616.56, so heavy players of that game may want to hold on an earlier driver. Owners of GTX 10-series and older cards cannot use this release at all.
What happens next
Nvidia typically ships Game Ready drivers every few weeks, timed to big launches. The next obvious milestones are the Witcher 3 remaster on September 29, AION 2’s global launch on September 30 and Gears of War: E-Day’s Early Access on October 1 — all of which are already covered by 617.14. Nvidia also says it will publish a dedicated launch article for the Witcher 3 remaster on GeForce.com on September 29. We will update this article if Nvidia pushes a hotfix for the open Assassin’s Creed Shadows crash.
