Premium Edition and Collector’s Edition owners can start five days early, on October 1. The Standard Edition costs $69.99, the Premium Edition $99.99 and the Premium upgrade $30, and the game is included on day one with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.

  • Release date: October 6, 2026

  • Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PC (Xbox app and Steam), Xbox Cloud Gaming; Xbox Play Anywhere

E-Day is the sixth main installment in the series and the first since Gears 5 in 2019. It is a prequel set 14 years before the original Gears of War, when the Locust first break through the surface of Sera, and The Coalition, working with original trilogy co-developer People Can Fly according to the game’s Wikipedia entry, built it from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5. With the open beta finished in August and early access a week away, here is everything confirmed about the launch, from editions and times to multiplayer and PC requirements.

When does Gears of War: E-Day come out?

The global release date is October 6, 2026, confirmed on the game’s Steam page, the Xbox store and The Coalition’s editions and pre-order guide, which puts it simply: “Emergence begins October 6.”

There are two ways to play before then:

  • Premium Edition early access: the Premium Edition lets you “Play 5 Days Early (October 1, 2026).” Microsoft’s Xbox store page says the $30 Premium Edition upgrade adds the same “up to 5 days Early Access.”
  • Collector’s Edition: this includes the Premium Edition, so it also unlocks on October 1. Xbox Wire says the Collector’s Edition “launches with early access on October 1 with global release of Gears of War: E‑Day following on October 6, 2026.”

The Coalition has not published exact unlock times for early access or launch on the official pages we checked as of September 24. The Steam listing does say pre-order bonuses are valid on orders placed before October 6 at 7:59am PT. That is a pre-order deadline, not a confirmed launch time.

Gears of War: E-Day editions and price

There are four ways to buy E-Day. Microsoft’s Xbox store page and Steam list the Standard Edition at $69.99 and the Premium Edition at $99.99 in the US, and Microsoft prices the Premium Edition upgrade at $30:

EditionPrice (US)FormatWhat’s included

Collector’s EditionNot listed in official announcementsPhysical (Xbox Series X disc or Steam code)Premium Edition plus a 15-inch statue, replica COG tags, SteelBook, art print, in-game photo and display packaging

What’s in the Premium Edition?

According to The Coalition, the Premium Edition’s Emergence Customization Pack includes the “Death’s Rendezvous” Marcus Fenix Legendary character skin, a Bloodied Hunter Tai Kaliso Epic skin, two Legendary character poses, the “Death’s Rendezvous” Legendary weapon skin set, the “Emergence Omen” Rare weapon skin set, and a matching banner, emblem and icon. Four more seasonal customization packs follow “as available.” Each includes two character skins, two weapon skin sets, two poses and a banner, emblem and icon. The edition also adds 1,000 Iron, the game’s premium currency, and the Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack, which can be used in the campaign only.

Pre-order bonus

Pre-ordering any edition gets you the Exfil Dom Legendary Character Skin and the Exfil Legendary Weapon Skin Set, available in-game from early access on October 1. The Dom skin works only for Dominic Santiago in Horde Siege and Versus. Digital pre-orders unlock it automatically, while physical pre-orders may come with a code by email or on the receipt, depending on the retailer.

The Collector’s Edition, explained

Announced at the Xbox Games Showcase in June, the Collector’s Edition is built around a 15-inch diorama statue of Marcus Fenix grabbing a falling Dom as he shoots a Feral Wretch coming out of an E-hole. The statue has a battery-powered red light and needs three AAA batteries, which are not included. It also comes with:

  • A 1:1 replica of Carlos Santiago’s COG tags in zinc alloy and brass
  • A SteelBook case illustrated by Luke Preece
  • A Feral Wretch art print in a portfolio case and a replica in-game photograph
  • Display packaging with a drawer for the tags and a thank-you note from The Coalition
  • The game: a physical disc on Xbox Series X, or a digital code on Steam, plus the Premium Edition upgrade

It is sold through the Xbox Game Studios Shop and selected retailers. Microsoft says “quantities are limited, and availability varies by region.”

Is Gears of War: E-Day on Game Pass?

Yes. Xbox Wire’s September wave 2 Game Pass roundup lists E-Day for October 6 on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, “available on day one with Xbox Game Pass,” across Xbox Series X|S, handheld, PC and cloud. Game Pass Premium and Essential are not listed for launch. In the US, Ultimate costs $22.99 a month and PC Game Pass $13.99.

Game Pass Ultimate members who want to start on October 1 can buy the $30 Premium Edition upgrade. Microsoft’s fine print says the upgrade “requires the base game or Game Pass Ultimate membership.” For $30 on top of a $22.99 month of Ultimate, that is cheaper than buying the $99.99 Premium Edition outright, though you lose access to the base game if your subscription lapses.

There is one more subscription detail for multiplayer. In its open beta FAQ, The Coalition says: “At launch, multiplayer access will require a Game Pass Essential membership or higher.” The editions page also warns that online campaign co-op, Horde Siege and Versus “may require a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer, sold separately.” If you buy the game outright on Xbox and want to play online, budget for at least Essential, which costs $9.99 a month.

Is Gears of War: E-Day on PS5?

No PlayStation 5 version has been announced. Microsoft lists E-Day for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Steam. It is an Xbox Play Anywhere title, so buying it on the Xbox Series X|S store or the Xbox PC store gives you both versions with one purchase.

Handheld support is part of the pitch. The Steam listing says E-Day is “fully optimized for handheld play on Steam Deck, Xbox Ally X, and Xbox Ally devices.” It also supports optional account linking for roaming saves and cross-platform invites, “2-4 player online co-op or competitive multiplayer for up to 8 players across supported platforms.”

What is Gears of War: E-Day about?

E-Day is an origin story. You can play the campaign solo, in two-player split-screen co-op on console, or with up to four players online. It follows a younger Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago on Emergence Day, “Fourteen years before the original Gears of War,” when the Locust Horde first attack from underground and the war with Sera’s humans begins. The Coalition has said the game is defined by “two beginnings”: the fall of Sera and the start of Marcus and Dom’s friendship, formed through their shared grief over Dom’s brother, Carlos.

The studio is promising “a darker, grittier tone,” reimagined enemies and new creatures meant to “restore fear and dread to the series.” Combat keeps Gears’ cover-based shooting but adds jumping, vaulting and sliding, along with a new low-cover system where your character can lie back-to-wall behind low debris.

Horde Siege and Versus: multiplayer at launch

The Coalition’s multiplayer deep dive describes two main modes.

Horde Siege (PvE)

  • 12 players: three four-player COG squads share large maps in the city of Kalona. The studio calls it the first time multiple squads have fought together in Horde.
  • Four classes: Assault (Sonic Disruptor), Breacher (Adrenaline Injector), Marksman (Pulse Drone) and Medic (Stim Vaporizer), each with 30 levels of progression at launch.
  • Three playlists: Blitz (about 15–20 minutes), Siege (20–40 minutes) and Horde (10 waves, up to 50–60 minutes).
  • Launch content: three Horde Siege maps and five objective types, with more planned after launch.

Versus (PvP)

  • 4v4 only, with everyone starting on equal loadouts and no weapon mods
  • Four core modes: Team Deathmatch, Conquest, Demolition and the new Crucible
  • Six new maps at launch, with Ranked and Social playlists
  • Limited-time modes planned, including a Trick or Treat mode for a Halloween event

Gears of War: E-Day PC requirements

What carried over from the open beta?

The open beta ran over two weekends: early access for pre-order customers and Game Pass members from August 6 to 10, then an open weekend for everyone from August 13 to 17. The Coalition says the beta title, beta medal and any beta challenge rewards will be available at launch. That includes the Epic Blast Damage Mags character skin for reaching player level 20. Class progression, player level and other medal progress reset at launch.

What happens next

The next dates are fixed. Premium Edition, Premium upgrade and Collector’s Edition owners start on Thursday, October 1. Everyone else, including Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers, gets in on Tuesday, October 6. Pre-order bonuses remain available until launch day. After release, The Coalition plans seasonal updates for Horde Siege and Versus with new classes, maps, missions, modifiers and limited-time events, and says it will share its full seasonal roadmap closer to launch.
