Sony held a double-length PlayStation State of Play on September 3, 2026, pairing its regular showcase with a dedicated State of Play Japan segment immediately after. Across the two broadcasts, PlayStation and its partners announced more than 30 games, headlined by an April 8, 2027 release date for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, new dates for Until Dawn 2 and Metro 2039, a surprise Maneater 2 reveal, a Crimson Desert expansion, limited-edition GTA VI DualSense controllers, and fresh looks at Marvel's Wolverine and Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance. Two shows, one State of Play

PlayStation billed the September 3 broadcast as a "double-sized" State of Play: a standard, roughly hour-long showcase covering PlayStation Studios titles and third-party partners, followed immediately by State of Play Japan, a second presentation focused on games from studios in Japan and across Asia. Between the two shows, PlayStation says it covered north of 30 games, mixing new release dates, extended gameplay, and a handful of surprise reveals. The broadcast closed on an extensive, multi-minute look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation, positioned as the marquee announcement of the night. Several of the night's trailers, including Metro 2039 and Crimson Desert's expansion, were captured running on PS5 Pro hardware, a reminder that Sony is still actively using the show to sell its higher-end console alongside the software itself.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation gets a release date and gameplay reveal

The biggest news of the night: Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and final chapter of Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII remake project, launches April 8, 2027 on PS5. State of Play marked the occasion with an extended deep dive into the game's expanded world. According to Sony, exploration now stretches "from the Highwind in the skies above to using grapple guns and chocobos to navigate the towns and landscapes below." The segment also gave a first proper look at the game's FITS combat system and the character synergies built around it, building on the mechanics introduced in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Revelation caps a trilogy that began with Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020 and continued with Rebirth in 2024, and its release date finally gives fans a concrete endpoint for the project — just over a year from this State of Play.

Until Dawn 2 heads to Blackwood Sanitorium and Akishima Island

Until Dawn 2 is now dated for January 28, 2027. Alongside the release date, Sony shared a new trailer following the "Dead True" crew on a double assignment: a return to the original game's Blackwood Sanitorium, then a trip to the new Akishima Island setting. The trailer emphasized the sequel's choice-driven narrative, teasing "the consequences that result" from player decisions — the same branching-survival hook that made the 2015 original, and last year's remake, distinctive.

The horror slate at this State of Play was unusually stacked: Until Dawn 2 shared the stage with Metro 2039 and an extended look at the Resident Evil movie, which opened in theaters worldwide on September 18, 2026, giving the show a heavier survival-horror lean than most recent editions.

Metro 2039 arrives February 4, 2027

Metro 2039 now has a release date too: February 4, 2027 on PS5. Sony's recap notes the trailer was captured on PS5 Pro and centers on a single-player story built around a new character referred to as "the Stranger." Metro 2039 lands roughly three weeks after Until Dawn 2 and just over two months before Final Fantasy VII Revelation, making early 2027 an unusually dense stretch for PS5 exclusives and timed content.

Maneater 2 is a surprise sequel

Among the show's genuine surprises was Maneater 2, revealed with a new trailer from developer Tripwire Interactive. The sequel drops players back into the fins of a man-eating bull shark, this time loose in an "ultra-luxury private island theme park" built for wealthy guests. Sony describes it as a chance to "eat, explore and evolve your way to freedom" against the park's bioengineered predators. Maneater 2 is set to launch on PS5 sometime in 2027; no specific date was given.

Crimson Desert's first expansion is dated

Pearl Abyss used the show to announce Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown, described by Sony as "a mammoth expansion" to the open-world action-adventure. It arrives on the PlayStation Store on October 15, 2026. The trailer, captured on PS5 Pro, follows characters Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane as they "set out to discover their purpose and shape their futures." Crimson Desert launched earlier in 2026 after years of development, and this marks its first major post-launch content drop — arriving alongside other big fall releases jostling for players' time this October.

Two limited-edition GTA VI DualSense controllers

Rockstar and PlayStation unveiled a pair of officially licensed controllers: the DualSense Wireless Controller — Grand Theft Auto VI Black Limited Edition, and the DualSense Wireless Controller — Grand Theft Auto VI White Limited Edition. Sony says both controllers "capture that unmistakable Vice City energy." Pre-orders open September 10, 2026, with both controllers launching November 19, 2026 — the same date Sony's recap lists for Grand Theft Auto VI itself on PS5. Gran Turismo 7's Spec IV update

Ahead of the franchise's 30th anniversary, Polyphony Digital detailed a two-part Gran Turismo 7 Spec IV update rolling out across October and December. Sony's recap lists 12 new cars and two new circuits split between the two drops, plus new modes: Online Drift Trials, Shuffle Races (which change the conditions of each race), and a Family mode aimed at welcoming players of different skill levels into the community. Marvel's Wolverine launch trailer and Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance

Marvel's Wolverine got a launch trailer just ahead of its September 15, 2026 release, showing more of Logan's relationship with allies including the telekinetic Jean Grey and the members of Team X, alongside glimpses of new characters. The game launched globally less than two weeks after this State of Play aired.

Capcom's Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance expansion also got new gameplay, set for a 2027 release on PS5. Sony's recap describes a "giant dragon's sudden siege" bringing change to the Forbidden Lands, with new and returning Elder Dragons — including a newly revealed monster called Gundoraja — alongside a new area called the Skybound Eyrie and a new "Boost Action" mechanic. Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto appeared during State of Play Japan to detail those additions further, and confirmed a playable demo featuring a hunt against another new monster, Arakeeta, at Tokyo Game Show 2026.

PlayStation Plus additions: Mycopunk, Mega Man X, Dino Crisis 2, Ratchet & Clank

Four games were confirmed for PlayStation Plus during the show. Mycopunk, a co-op looter shooter for one to four players, is heading to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog later this year; Sony describes it as sending "a squad of ramshackle robots" to clean up a fungus-infected planet, looting mechanical enemies and building new weapons along the way. Separately, PlayStation Plus Premium's Classics lineup is adding three titles this year: Mega Man X: Command Mission in September, plus Dino Crisis 2 and the original Ratchet & Clank. Together, the four additions give Premium subscribers a mix of a brand-new co-op shooter and three catalog staples spanning three different console generations, without a specific calendar date attached to the Dino Crisis 2 or Ratchet & Clank additions beyond "this year."

State of Play Japan, and everything else announced

The second half of the broadcast, State of Play Japan, was hosted by Yuki Kaji and focused on deep dives into games from studios across Japan and Asia. Beyond the extended Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance segment, the Japan-focused show included new gameplay for a Fate/Extra Record remake, described as expanding on the "Moon Holy Grail War" storyline with a revamped, deck-building Command Card battle system; that title is also dated for January 28, 2027, the same day as Until Dawn 2. Other Japan-segment reveals included Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3, slated for 2027, and Gundam Rogue Orbit, dated March 5, 2027.

Beyond the headline reveals, State of Play packed in a long list of smaller announcements. PlayStation and LEGO confirmed a collaboration set letting fans "create a LEGO replica of the original PlayStation console and PlayStation controller." Sony says the 1,911-piece set measures roughly 10.5 inches (26 cm) wide when fully assembled and launches October 1, 2026, with hidden details throughout that reference PlayStation history.

The broadcast opened, rather than closed, on non-game news: an extended clip from the upcoming Resident Evil film directed by Zach Cregger (Barbarian, Weapons). Sony's recap describes the movie's story following "medical courier Bryan" as he attempts a delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital and gets caught up in a viral outbreak; the film opened in theaters worldwide on September 18, 2026.

On the games side, Double Fine's atmospheric puzzle adventure Keeper launched the same day as the broadcast, while Sloclap's online multiplayer football game Rematch confirmed a crossover with the anime Blue Lock, adding its cast of "Egoists" to the roster starting September 24. Dark Star Games also showed a new trailer for Daba: Land of Water Scar, a PlayStation China Hero Project title casting players as a "clayman" exploring a drought-stricken world, now dated for spring 2027.

What's next

With Marvel's Wolverine already out and Crimson Desert's expansion landing October 15, PlayStation's next real test is the run of early 2027 releases stacked up by this show: Until Dawn 2 on January 28, Metro 2039 on February 4, and Final Fantasy VII Revelation on April 8. Sony has not announced a follow-up State of Play date, but the publisher typically holds showcases every few months, so expect further gameplay on Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance — including whatever comes out of its Tokyo Game Show 2026 demo — and a firmer release window for Maneater 2 in the months ahead.
