What Is Zombies Mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7?

Zombies is the co-op, round-based survival mode that Treyarch has built into every mainline Black Ops game since World at War. In Black Ops 7, up to four players fight off escalating waves of the undead on a single connected map, unlocking doors, buying weapons off the wall, finding Perk-a-Cola machines, and eventually pursuing a story-driven main quest tied into the long-running Dark Aether narrative that began in Black Ops Cold War and continued through Black Ops 6's Reckoning. According to Treyarch's own Zombies deep dive on the official Call of Duty blog, the entire Black Ops 7 story takes place within the "beating heart" of the Dark Aether, where different timelines collide into one combined, eight-person crew: Dempsey, Nikolai, Takeo, Richtofen, Maya, Weaver, Carver, and Grey.

That eight-character roster is itself a first for the series — it merges the classic Primis/Ultimis cast (voiced again by Nolan North, Fred Tatasciore, and Steve Blum, with Nelson Lee debuting as a new, 16th-century incarnation of Takeo Masaki) with the modern Black Ops 6 "Dedicated Crew." You can still play as any standard multiplayer Operator in a Zombies match, but Treyarch says choosing one of the eight Dedicated Crew characters unlocks extra dialogue and the richest version of the story.

Launch Map: Ashes of the Damned

Black Ops 7 Zombies launched on November 14, 2025 with one Round-Based map, Ashes of the Damned — described by Treyarch as the biggest round-based Zombies map the studio has built. The setup is explicitly inspired by Black Ops 2's Tranzit: rather than one contained building, the map strings together six distinct locations connected by foggy, monster-infested roads that you traverse largely by vehicle. The official Tac Map and blog describe Ashes of the Damned as an otherworldly "Bermuda Triangle" where locations ripped from different eras of Black Ops Zombies history have been dumped into the Dark Aether.

LocationWhat it is
Janus Towers PlazaA triple-towered superstructure crashed into the Dark Aether, one tower collapsed, power lines arcing overhead
Vandorn FarmA once-idyllic homestead turned ritualistic horror site; also the map's standalone Survival mode
Blackwater LakeDark waters haunted by tormented phantoms tied to a single remembered act of horror
AshwoodA frontier town sunk into the rift and overrun during a war from a bygone era
Exit 115A crumbling rest stop and freeway overpass torn from its original location, including Reba's Diner
Zarya CosmodromeA site tied to sabotage and scientific hubris that prevented a planned "ascension"

Connecting those six locations is "The Fog" — foggy traversal roads dotted with points of interest like a grounded ship and a forest of monoliths. Treyarch's blog warns that the Fog doesn't scale difficulty gradually: enemies inside it hit harder, spawn faster, and move quicker than anywhere else on the map, so lingering there is a deliberate risk rather than a safe shortcut.

Four Ways to Play: Standard, Directed, Survival, and Cursed

One of the bigger structural changes in Black Ops 7 is splitting Zombies into four distinct modes instead of just toggling difficulty on a single map type:

  • Standard is the full Round-Based experience on Ashes of the Damned, with access to the Main Quest and Side Quest content. This is the mode for players chasing the easter egg.
  • Directed is a streamlined, more guided version of the same map aimed at newer players or anyone who just wants to see the story beats without hunting down every quest step. Treyarch says it launches after Standard, on a cadence similar to Black Ops 6.
  • Survival brings back small, quest-free endurance maps for the first time since Black Ops 2. At launch that's Vandorn Farm — a fenced-in slice of the full map where you and your squad simply hold out as long as possible, with Pack-a-Punch and Der Wunderfizz machines relocated into the smaller space since they aren't normally there in Standard mode.
  • Cursed is the new hardcore option, built from community feedback. You can't enter it until you meet certain in-game criteria, and once you do, you start with only a pistol, no Loadout weapons, no minimap, and an old-school point system inspired by Black Ops 3. The goal is hunting down Relics — cursed artifacts themed around classic Zombies totems — that each apply a debuff (like capping you to four Perk-a-Colas) in exchange for unlocking more powerful Relics and rewards later.

That's a meaningfully different menu than Black Ops 6 offered, where Zombies was effectively one round-based map type with optional side activities layered on top.

New Wonder Vehicle and Wonder Weapon

Because Ashes of the Damned spans six separate locations, Treyarch added a Wonder Vehicle for the first time since Tranzit's bus: Ol' Tessie, a rusting pickup truck that starts off barely functional and can be repaired and upgraded as you explore, including a mountable DG-2 turret and cosmetic nods to past Zombies drivers. It can also be battered into a temporarily inoperable state if you're not careful on the road.

The map's new Wonder Weapon is the Necrofluid Gauntlet, alongside the returning Ray Gun and Ray Gun Mark II. It's described as a black, skull-fanged glove that reshapes a viscous dark fluid into spikes you can fire at range and recall for follow-up damage, with a vampiric pull that drags in nearby items and Power-Ups. On the enemy side, Ashes of the Damned introduces swarming base zombies and Ravagers (pack-hunting scavengers that can latch onto moving vehicles) alongside an Elite-tier threat called the Zursa — an undead bear infested with stinging "Zombees" that erupt from hives on its body.

Augments, Perks, and the New Overheal System

If there's one system Treyarch leaned hardest into for Black Ops 7, it's Augments. The official Augments breakdown puts the total at 192 Augments across 24 types of enhancement — 12 Perk-a-Colas, 6 Ammo Mods, and 6 Field Upgrades — which is 66 more choices than Black Ops 6 shipped with, and Research progress earned in Black Ops 6 carries straight over.

The headline addition is Wisp Tea, a brand-new Perk-a-Cola that summons a spectral companion to fight alongside you after you deal enough damage to zombies. It joins 11 returning Perk-a-Colas (Jugger-Nog, PhD Flopper, Elemental Pop, Melee Macchiato, Vulture Aid, Double Tap, Quick Revive, Deadshot Daiquiri, Death Perception, Stamin-Up, and Speed Cola), each with its own expanded Augment tree. Ammo Mods add a new entry too — Fire Works, returning from Black Ops 3, which scatters explosive flares across a crowd — alongside five returning mods, while Field Upgrades gain Toxic Growth, a poison-vine deployable, next to five returning options.

The other new mechanic is Overheal. Certain Augment and Equipment combinations (Jugger-Nog's Probiotic Augment plus Stim Shot Equipment, for example) can push your maximum health up to 100 points above normal, and further tactics can grant a temporary Overheal buff on top of that — a bonus that doesn't regenerate and disappears once your health drops below the normal cap, but can be earned back mid-fight.

Dead Ops Arcade 4: Papaback in Black

Zombies isn't only the round-based map. Dead Ops Arcade — the self-aware twin-stick shooter Easter egg that first appeared hidden in the original Black Ops in 2010 — returns for the first time in five years as Dead Ops Arcade 4: Papaback in Black. Per Treyarch, it expands to 80 levels across more than 20 arenas, adds Silverback Challenges and new Slayer Maps, and lets you arm up with nine-plus upgradable weapons (including the Wunderwaffe DG-2 and Jet Gun) against bosses like the Z-Rex, Zursa, Golem, and Mega Abomination. It now also borrows Round-Based mechanics — Ammo Mods, Field Upgrades, and GobbleGums — and supports both the classic twin-stick view and a first-person mode, solo or with up to four players.

Exfil: How Matches End Now

Black Ops 7 also changes how you leave a match. Instead of calling in a helicopter, you're relying on an "archaic German telefonzellen booth" repurposed as a portal. These phone booths activate periodically; answering one summons a High Value Target and its minions that your squad must kill within a time limit to unlock the portal. The genuinely new wrinkle: teammates can individually decline to Exfil. Players who accept are locked into finishing (or dying trying), while anyone who opts out can keep playing the match afterward without penalty — a flexibility Black Ops 6's all-or-nothing extraction didn't offer.

The Ashes of the Damned Easter Egg

Standard mode's Main Quest on Ashes of the Damned is one of the longest launch-day easter eggs the series has shipped, built around upgrading Ol' Tessie, rescuing the recurring character Klaus, fighting through Reba's Diner and the Ashwood Sheriff's Office, decoding a puzzle in a lab, and ultimately confronting a boss entity named Veytharion. Community trackers clocked a full completion at well over ten hours for a four-person squad on launch weekend — reflecting the scale of a six-location map rather than a single contained building. Treyarch has also indicated it's considering an even larger "super" easter egg tying multiple maps together as more Round-Based content arrives across the game's seasons.

Zombies in the Open Beta

Zombies wasn't held back for launch entirely. Black Ops 7's beta — covered in Pandromeda's guide to downloading the open beta — marked the first time the series put Zombies content into a public Multiplayer beta alongside the usual map and mode tests, according to Xbox Wire's official beta rundown. The playable slice was Survival mode on Vandorn Farm, giving players a quest-free taste of the full Ashes of the Damned experience roughly six weeks before launch. The Early Access period ran from October 2, with the Open Beta following on October 5 and the whole test wrapping October 8.

Worth noting if you're weighing a PC purchase: Black Ops 7's Steam store listing confirms the game requires both Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 for its kernel-level RICOCHET anti-cheat, the same requirement covered in Pandromeda's walkthrough for enabling TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot for Call of Duty and Battlefield 6. If you're deciding between this and other fall shooters, our Battlefield 6 vs. Black Ops 7 comparison breaks down price, platforms, and player counts side by side.

What's Next for Black Ops 7 Zombies

Treyarch has been explicit that Ashes of the Damned is only the first of several planned Round-Based maps. The studio's deep dive confirms a second Round-Based map is planned for Season 1, with additional Survival maps following across subsequent seasons, and Dead Ops Arcade 4 content tied into Call of Duty: Warzone progression as well. The official Ashes of the Damned cinematic on the Call of Duty YouTube channel is worth watching for the narrative setup before jumping in, and Treyarch's blog promises more Relics will be added to Cursed mode "throughout the post-launch seasons," so expect the mode's scope — maps, Relics, and Augments alike — to keep expanding well past launch week.

For now, if you're catching up, the fastest way in is Standard mode on Ashes of the Damned for the full story and easter egg, Survival on Vandorn Farm for a quick, no-pressure session, or Dead Ops Arcade 4 if you just want chaotic, score-chasing fun without committing to a full round-based run.
