Battlefield 6 vs Black Ops 7: Price, Platforms and Players Compared

Battlefield 6 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 are both shooting for the same $69.99 wallet, but they are not chasing the same player. Electronic Arts says Battlefield 6 sold over 7 million copies in its first three days and has since become the best-selling shooter of 2025, while Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is the only one of the two included in Xbox Game Pass and is, by most public accounts, still the more-played game on console. On PC, the picture flips: Battlefield 6 has a clear, EA-confirmed lead in launch sales and, according to Wikipedia's tracking of the games' Steam pages, in concurrent players too. Here is what each game actually costs, what you get in each edition, which platforms and modes they support, and what can and cannot be verified about how many people are playing.

Price and editions compared

Both publishers landed on the exact same $69.99 entry price for the standard edition, and both offer a single step-up bundle priced at $99.99. Neither company has published a physical-media-free "deluxe" tier beyond that, though Black Ops 7 buyers can pay a $30 upgrade fee to move from Standard to Vault after the fact, per Call of Duty's own breakdown of editions and pre-order bonuses.

Neither edition includes a season pass' worth of content up front — both structures are "buy the game, then buy or earn the battle pass each season" rather than a one-time all-inclusive purchase. Both prices are confirmed directly on the platform storefronts: Battlefield 6 on Steam and Black Ops 7 on Steam both list $69.99 for the base game, and the Call of Duty edition breakdown confirms the $99.99 Vault Edition price and its $30 upgrade path.

Platforms: where each game actually runs

This is the single biggest structural difference between the two games. Battlefield 6 is current-generation only — EA's own FAQ and its PlayStation store listing both show PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam, EA App, Epic Games Store) — with no PS4 or Xbox One version at all. Black Ops 7 is a genuine cross-gen release: it's playable on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, plus PC through Steam, Battle.net, or the Xbox app, and Activision's Cross-Gen bundles let one purchase cover both the last-gen and current-gen versions of the same console family.

Campaign: solo Marines vs co-op JSOC squad

Battlefield 6's single-player campaign, according to both EA and Wikipedia, follows a U.S. Marine Raider unit — Dagger 1-3, led by Gunnery Sergeant Dylan Murphy — through a near-future conflict against NATO and a private military company, with missions spanning Georgia, Gibraltar, Cairo, New York City, and Tajikistan. It's built as a solo, story-first campaign in the classic Battlefield mold; there is no co-op campaign mode, and Steam's own store listing for Battlefield 6 tags it "Single-player" and "Multi-player" but does not list a co-op category at all.

Black Ops 7 goes the opposite direction. Its campaign — 11 missions set in 2035 around the fictional Mediterranean city-state of Avalon, following a JSOC unit investigating the return of Raul Menendez — is built for co-op from the ground up, playable solo or with up to four players, and Steam's Black Ops 7 listing explicitly tags both "Co-op" and "Online Co-op." Finishing every mission unlocks Endgame, a 32-player extraction-style mode with time-limited objectives that plays closer to a raid than a linear mission. Multiplayer, Zombies, and Portal: where the modes diverge

Battlefield 6's identity is still large-scale, vehicle-heavy PvP: Conquest, Breakthrough, and Rush anchor the mode list, alongside Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch, Domination, King of the Hill, and two new additions, Escalation and Sabotage, across nine maps at launch. Portal, Battlefield's custom-server toolset, lets players build and host their own rule sets and modes for up to 100 players in a single match. EA later spun off RedSec, a free-to-play battle royale mode built on the same engine, as a separate download.

Black Ops 7's multiplayer is more traditional Call of Duty: 6v6 Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, and Overload, plus a larger 20v20 Skirmish mode, across 18 maps at launch, with the series' usual Prestige rank system. What sets it apart from Battlefield 6 is everything built around it: Round-Based Zombies returns with six maps continuing the Black Ops 6 storyline, five distinct ways to play it (Standard, Directed, Survival, Dead Ops Arcade 4, and Cursed), and the classic Essence/Salvage economy, Perk-a-Colas, armor, and GobbleGum consumables. Combined with the co-op campaign and Endgame's extraction structure, Black Ops 7 offers meaningfully more cooperative and PvE content than Battlefield 6, which stays almost entirely PvP outside its solo campaign.

Xbox Game Pass: the deciding factor for a lot of buyers

This is the clearest, most easily verified difference between the two games. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 launched day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, confirmed on Xbox's own Black Ops 7 page, which also notes Ultimate and PC Game Pass members get a bundled cosmetic pack for both Black Ops 7 and Warzone. Battlefield 6 has no Game Pass presence at all — it must be bought outright on every platform, including PC through Steam, the EA App, or Epic. For anyone already paying for Game Pass Ultimate, that makes Black Ops 7 effectively free to try, while Battlefield 6 is a straight $69.99-or-more purchase regardless of subscription status.

Sales and player counts: what's actually confirmed, and what isn't

EA has published real, specific numbers for Battlefield 6. Its October 2025 newsroom release states the game sold over 7 million copies in its first three days, generated more than 172 million matches played and over 15 million hours watched on streaming during that opening weekend, and delivered "the most concurrent players for Battlefield ever" — without EA disclosing an exact peak figure. EA has separately called Battlefield 6 the best-selling shooter of 2025 and its franchise's biggest launch to date.

Activision, notably, has not published an equivalent sales or concurrent-player figure for Black Ops 7 through its own newsroom or blog. Public tracking compiled in Wikipedia's Black Ops 7 article — sourced to regional sales-chart and Steam-tracking outlets rather than Activision itself — puts Black Ops 7 as the fifth best-selling game in the US for 2025 (the lowest US chart placement for a mainline Call of Duty since 2008), with European sales reported down more than 50% from Black Ops 6 and roughly 63% below Battlefield 6, and a Steam concurrent-player peak cited as "above 100,000," down from Black Ops 6's roughly 315,000 in the same window. Wikipedia's Battlefield 6 article, by the same kind of sourcing, cites over 500,000 concurrent Steam players during Battlefield 6's pre-launch open beta alone.

We're deliberately not repeating more precise concurrent-player numbers you'll see elsewhere, because they come from third-party trackers reading Steam's public data rather than from EA, Activision, or Valve directly, and different trackers don't always agree down to the exact figure. What is independently checkable right now, on Steam's own public "Top Games by Current Players" chart, is that as of this writing neither Battlefield 6 nor Black Ops 7 sits in Steam's current top five most-played games — both have settled well below their respective launch peaks nearly a year on, which is normal for full-price premium shooters once the launch window passes. On console, neither Sony nor Microsoft publishes per-game concurrent-player counts, so the frequently repeated claim that Black Ops 7 "wins" on console engagement — plausible given its Game Pass inclusion and cross-gen reach — is not something either platform holder has confirmed with a number.

Which one should you actually buy

If you already pay for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass, Black Ops 7 is close to a free decision — it's already included, it has more modes to sink time into (Zombies, Endgame, co-op campaign, standard multiplayer), and you can decide later whether the $99.99 Vault Edition or a $30 upgrade is worth it once you've played it. If you don't subscribe to Game Pass and you want the widest hardware reach, including a last-gen PS4 or Xbox One, Black Ops 7 is also the only one of the two that will run on that hardware at all.

If you're on current-gen hardware or a gaming PC and care most about large-scale, vehicle-driven PvP with a single, focused solo campaign, Battlefield 6 is the better-reviewed, higher-selling pick of the two by every EA-confirmed metric available, and it's the one more likely to have the bigger active PC population based on the public Steam data that exists. Neither publisher has made this an easy apples-to-apples call — one game leans on subscription reach and PvE variety, the other on outright sales and PvP scale — so the honest answer is that "which is better" depends on whether you value Game Pass access and co-op content, or a tighter, harder-hitting battlefield built for competitive multiplayer.
