Black Ops 7 Zombies drops new players into a single, sprawling round-based map called Ashes of the Damned, a 12-Perk-a-Cola system built on Black Ops 6's Augment research, and four distinct ways to play — Standard, Directed, Survival and the hardcore Cursed mode. This guide walks through the launch map's six locations, how Perk-a-Colas and Augments work, and the fundamentals Treyarch itself recommends for staying alive past the first few rounds, based entirely on Call of Duty's own blog posts and in-game intel.

What Is Black Ops 7 Zombies?

Black Ops 7 Zombies continues directly from the ending of Black Ops 6's "Reckoning" questline. The story takes place inside the Dark Aether itself, where timelines collide and an eight-person "Dedicated Crew" — Dempsey, Nikolai, Takeo, Richtofen, Maya, Weaver, Carver and Grey — gets pulled together. Treyarch's official Zombies blog confirms that any Black Ops 7 Operator can be used in a match, but choosing a Dedicated Crew character unlocks extra dialogue and story context.

Round-based Zombies launched alongside the rest of Black Ops 7 on November 14, 2025, with the first map, Ashes of the Damned. Treyarch has said more round-based maps and Survival maps are planned across post-launch seasons, with the second round-based map arriving in Season 1.

Much of the systems-level Zombies content — Augment research, GobbleGums, Double XP Tokens — carries forward from Black Ops 6, so returning players keep their progress. New players start from scratch but benefit from a streamlined early-game: base perks are cheaper to research and the new Directed mode exists specifically to ease newcomers into the mode's objectives.

Ashes of the Damned: The Launch Map

Ashes of the Damned is described by Treyarch as an off-world "Bermuda Triangle" — a Dark Aether purgatory where six unrelated real-world locations have been torn out of their own timelines and dropped into the same fog-choked landscape. According to the official Call of Duty Zombies Intel Blast and Call of Duty's own Ashes of the Damned Tac Map guide, the six main areas are:

  • Janus Towers Plaza — a triple-towered superstructure (familiar to Liberty Falls veterans) that has crashed into the Dark Aether, with one tower collapsed and power lines arcing overhead.
  • Vandorn Farm — a once-idyllic homestead turned horror scene; this is also the smaller map used for Zombies Survival mode.
  • Blackwater Lake — dark water haunted by phantoms tied to a single act of violence.
  • Ashwood — a sunken frontier town overrun during a long-past war.
  • Exit 115 — a crumbling freeway rest stop torn from its original highway.
  • Zarya Cosmodrome — a space launch facility defined by betrayal and scientific hubris.

Connecting all six locations are roadways blanketed in "the Fog." Treyarch's blog is explicit that the Fog is not a gentle difficulty ramp: zombies inside foggy stretches spawn faster, hit harder and move quicker than anywhere else on the map, so new players should only cross on foot when necessary and ideally travel as a group, or use the map's Wonder Vehicle instead.

Ol' Tessie, Jump Pads and the Saw Blade Trap

Ol' Tessie, a rusted pickup truck, is the map's Wonder Vehicle and the primary way to move safely between locations. It can take damage and become temporarily inoperable, and the official blog notes it can be upgraded with finds across the map, including a mountable turret. Separately, powered-up Jump Pads let a squad pay a small Essence fee to launch instantly to a second landing pad elsewhere on the map — useful for regrouping quickly or returning to a Perk machine without braving the Fog on foot. The Saw Blade Trap, built from scavenged junk (a wired-up chainsaw rig), can be flipped on with Essence to lure and shred nearby zombies, making it a cheap crowd-control option in the map's early rounds.

Wonder Weapon and Enemies to Know

The map's new Wonder Weapon is the Necrofluid Gauntlet, a glove that reshapes a living dark fluid into piercing spikes at range and can reportedly pull in nearby items and Power-Ups. Alongside standard and armored zombies, Treyarch's bestiary intel calls out two threats worth learning early: Ravagers, pack-hunting scavengers that can latch onto Ol' Tessie even at speed, and the Zursa, an Elite-tier undead bear that charges through squads and carries a swarm of stinging "Zombees." Both are far more dangerous in groups or inside the Fog, so disengaging and repositioning is often safer than standing and fighting.

Zombies Game Modes Explained

Black Ops 7 ships with four ways to play round-based and Survival Zombies, plus the separate Dead Ops Arcade 4 experience. Per the official Zombies deep dive:

  • Standard — the full Ashes of the Damned experience with Main Quest and Side Quest content. Treyarch recommends this for experienced players.
  • Directed — a guided version of the same map with clearer objectives, built specifically to be approachable for new players or anyone chasing the story without hunting for every clue themselves.
  • Survival — a smaller, quest-free map (currently the Vandorn Farm section of Ashes of the Damned) where the only goal is holding out as long as possible before choosing to Exfil. It's the fastest way to learn weapons, Perks and Field Upgrades without the pressure of a full quest.
  • Cursed — an unlockable, old-school hardcore mode. Matches start with only a pistol, no Loadout weapons, no minimap and a classic Black Ops 3-style points system. Progress is built around finding "Relics" that grant power at the cost of extra restrictions, such as a four-Perk limit.

For a first match, Treyarch's own beginner intel points new players toward the in-game Training Course and then Survival mode on Vandorn Farm before tackling the full Standard or Directed experience on Ashes of the Damned. The official Multiplayer and Zombies Beta guide frames this as the intended on-ramp: the Training Course teaches movement and combat basics, while a short Survival run on Vandorn Farm lets you test weapons, Perks, Ammo Mods and Field Upgrades with no quest objectives to track and little chance of a long, confusing run ending badly.

Also worth knowing before your first match: Dead Ops Arcade 4, subtitled "Papaback in Black," is a separate twin-stick arcade mode accessed from the main menu rather than from the regular Zombies map select. It's unrelated to the Ashes of the Damned story and quests, so new players can safely ignore it until they've got a handle on round-based Zombies first.

Perk-a-Colas: The Perk System Explained

Perk-a-Colas are the backbone of Zombies' survivability. Black Ops 7 launches with 12 total — 11 returning from past games plus one brand-new Perk, Wisp Tea — and every Perk now comes with its own set of unlockable Augments (passive bonus effects) researched over time, continuing progress from Black Ops 6 where applicable. A fully researched Perk gives eight Augments, three of which (one Major, two Minor) can be active in a match at once.

Perk-a-ColaCore EffectStatus

Deadshot DaiquiriTighter aim-down-sights precision and extra critical damageReturning

Two mechanics matter most for beginners here. First, Perk prices now scale based on how many Perks you've purchased, but Perks you got for free (via Power-Ups, GobbleGums or Easter Eggs) no longer count toward that scaling, so free Perk pickups are more valuable than before. Second, the Der Wunderfizz machine — a single machine that dispenses a random Perk per use — no longer appears automatically at a fixed round; the official blog confirms it now appears once your squad has bought a certain number of Perks between you, which rewards actively buying up your loadout early rather than hoarding Essence.

A new "Overheal" system also affects Perk choices: certain Augments (such as Jugger-Nog's Probiotic Augment) and items like Stim Shot can push your maximum health up to 100 points above normal, though that bonus health doesn't regenerate once lost and has to be reacquired.

Ammo Mods and Field Upgrades

Beyond Perks, two other enhancement categories round out a loadout. Ammo Mods are elemental upgrades bought at the Arsenal machine using Salvage, applied to one weapon at a time: Fire Works (new, returning from Black Ops 3), Brain Rot, Napalm Burst, Shadow Rift, Dead Wire and Cryo Freeze. Field Upgrades are deployable abilities that recharge by killing enemies and can be swapped mid-match from the Pause menu: Toxic Growth (new), Dark Flare, Healing Aura, Frenzied Guard, Energy Mine and Aether Shroud.

Like Perks, every Ammo Mod and Field Upgrade has its own eight-Augment research tree carried over from Black Ops 6 progress, with three Augments active at once. Treyarch's Augments Intel Blast notes the full system launches with 192 total Augments across all 24 enhancement types, a 66-Augment increase over Black Ops 6. New players shouldn't feel pressure to understand all of them immediately — focus on whichever Perk, Ammo Mod and Field Upgrade combination you find first, and let Augment choices come later through natural play.

In practice, Augments unlock through play rather than purchase, and each enhancement has two tiers: Major Augments (one active at a time) and Minor Augments (two active at a time, once a specific Perk, Ammo Mod or Field Upgrade is fully researched). Jugger-Nog is a useful example: its Major Augments include Probiotic (raises max health further) and Turtle Shell (armor absorbs rear damage), while Minor Augments like Hardened Plates and Retaliation stack small survivability bonuses on top. Fully researching all eight Augments for a single enhancement also unlocks an "Extra Slot" Minor Augment, letting that one Perk, Ammo Mod or Field Upgrade run two Minor Augments simultaneously. There's no wrong order to research in — simply using a Perk, Ammo Mod or Field Upgrade across matches is what progresses its research diagram.

Essence, Salvage and GobbleGums

Essence is the main currency, earned by killing zombies and spent on doors, Wall Buys, Perk machines, Jump Pads, Pack-a-Punch and Traps. Salvage is a secondary currency, dropped separately by enemies, used specifically at the Arsenal machine to apply Ammo Mods or upgrade a weapon's rarity tier (Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary). If you're consistently missing Salvage pickups before they despawn, the game now automatically returns about half of your missed Salvage every ten rounds.

The Mystery Box costs 950 Essence per spin and can return anything from a common weapon to a Wonder Weapon, with odds improving as rounds progress. Pack-a-Punch upgrades a weapon up to three tiers for a growing Essence cost and, unique to Ashes of the Damned, the machine is mounted directly onto Ol' Tessie rather than sitting in a fixed location.

GobbleGums are single-use consumable perks with randomized or purchasable effects, color-coded by rarity from common Blue (Rare) up through Rainbow (Whimsical). Black Ops 7 launches with 47 GobbleGum flavors, and any GobbleGums already owned from Black Ops 6 carry forward automatically. New players can equip up to five Packs of five GobbleGums each before a match and swap packs at the Pause menu mid-game — a simple, low-risk way to experiment with buffs like extra max ammo or bonus Essence.

Beginner Tips for Surviving Longer

These fundamentals come straight from Treyarch's own beginner-facing intel and the mechanics confirmed in its official blogs:

  1. Start in Survival or Directed, not Standard. Both modes exist specifically to ease new players in — Survival strips out quests entirely, and Directed guides you through objectives instead of leaving you to find them cold.
  2. Buy Jugger-Nog and Quick Revive as early as Essence allows. Extra max health and faster revives are the two Perks that most directly extend how long a squad survives, especially before anyone has researched defensive Augments.
  3. Use Wall Buys before relying on the Mystery Box. A Wall Buy weapon is guaranteed and cheap; the 950-Essence Mystery Box is a gamble that's better saved for later rounds once your Essence income is reliable.
  4. Treat the Fog as a hard difficulty spike, not just atmosphere. Enemies inside foggy connector roads spawn faster and hit harder than anywhere else on Ashes of the Damned — cross with Ol' Tessie or a full squad rather than solo on foot.
  5. Learn your nearest Jump Pad and Exfil Phone Booth locations early. Jump Pads are a cheap way to regroup or retreat to a Perk machine, and Phone Booths are how you leave a match cleanly instead of being overrun.
  6. Don't ignore armor. Wall Buy armor plates (now combined into a single upgrade path up to Level III) significantly reduce incoming damage and are inexpensive compared to most Perk purchases.
  7. Spend GobbleGums rather than hoarding them. Because GobbleGums can now be recycled into Essence if unused, there's little downside to trying one out in an early round to learn what it does.

Exfil Phone Booths and Other New Mechanics

Black Ops 7 replaces the old helicopter extraction with Exfil Phone Booths scattered across Ashes of the Damned. According to Treyarch, booths activate periodically; answering one opens a portal but also summons a tough High Value Target and its minions that must be defeated before a timer runs out. If your squad succeeds, the portal becomes usable and ends the match for everyone who opted in — while teammates who decline can keep playing without penalty, win or lose. New players should treat an Exfil as a deliberate decision, not an automatic choice: only commit once your squad is actually ready to end the run.

Melee combat also got a meaningful update. Landing a melee hit on an enemy's head now counts as a critical hit for bonus damage and Essence, and heavy melee attacks hit harder (if a little slower) than before — worth knowing if you're trying to conserve ammo in early rounds.

What's Next for Zombies

Treyarch has confirmed that Ashes of the Damned is only the beginning: additional round-based maps and Survival maps are planned across Black Ops 7's post-launch seasons, alongside continued Augment and GobbleGum additions.
