What Is Cross-Progression? How It Works, Explained

A plain-English guide to cross-progression — carrying your save, cosmetics and currency across PS5, Xbox, Switch 2, PC and mobile — plus how it differs from crossplay.

Cross-progression means your save file, character level, unlocked cosmetics and (sometimes) your in-game currency follow you between platforms — so progress you make on a PS5 is still there when you pick up the same game on Xbox, Switch 2, PC or mobile. It is enabled by linking your platform accounts (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam, Epic) to one central account the publisher controls, and support varies a lot from game to game: some titles sync everything, some only sync part of your progress, and some — despite having crossplay — don't offer it at all.

The short version:

  • Cross-progression = your save/unlocks/cosmetics move between platforms. Crossplay = you can play with people on other platforms. They're related but separate, and a game can have one without the other.
  • It almost always requires linking your console/Steam/Epic accounts to one publisher account (Epic Games account, Activision account, EA account, Bungie.net, etc.).
  • Premium currency bought with real money (V-Bucks, CoD Points) is the most common thing that does not fully carry over — it's usually locked to the platform where you bought it.
  • Fortnite, Call of Duty, Apex Legends, Destiny 2 and (since Season 5) Marvel Rivals all support it. Helldivers 2, as of now, does not.

What cross-progression actually means

"Cross-progression" is shorthand for carrying your game state across hardware. That state typically includes your character level or rank, campaign or story completion, unlocked weapons and skins, battle pass tiers, and challenge/achievement progress. The mechanism behind it is almost never magic — it's an account system. The publisher runs a central account (an Epic Games account, an Activision account, an EA account, a Bungie.net profile, and so on) that stores your actual progress on its own servers. Your PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam and mobile logins are just different doors into that same account. Link the doors together, and whichever one you walk through, the progress inside is identical.

That's also why cross-progression is never something a console maker or Steam switches on by itself. Sony, Microsoft and Valve provide the plumbing (account linking flows, cloud save APIs), but it's the game studio that has to build its save data around a shared account rather than a per-platform one, and then decide how much of that data it's willing to sync. That's why support is inconsistent even among big live-service games — it's an engineering and business decision made per title, not a platform feature you can just expect to be there. Wikipedia's overview of cross-platform play groups cross-save, cross-buy and cloud-sync under the same umbrella for exactly this reason: none of them is guaranteed just because the others exist.

Cross-progression vs. crossplay: the difference that trips everyone up

These two terms get used interchangeably online, but they solve different problems:

  • Crossplay is about matchmaking — can a PlayStation player, an Xbox player and a PC player end up in the same lobby or squad? That's a networking and input-fairness question (controller vs. mouse-and-keyboard aim assist, server regions, etc.).
  • Cross-progression is about save data — does the time you've put in, and the stuff you've unlocked, exist on more than one platform?

A game can have either one without the other. Helldivers 2 is the clearest current example: Arrowhead's shooter supports full crossplay across PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, so squads can mix platforms freely, but it has no cross-progression system — your Helldiver, unlocked Stratagems and Super Credits all stay on the platform where you earned them. Destiny 2 shows the reverse history: Bungie shipped Cross Save (progression) in 2019, years before full cross-platform matchmaking became standard, specifically because the two systems are built and rolled out independently. For the matchmaking side of this topic in more depth, see our explainer on how crossplay actually works.

A third related term: cross-buy

There's a third term worth knowing so you don't conflate it with the other two: cross-buy means that buying a game (or DLC, or a cosmetic bundle) on one platform gives you a license to use it on another, without paying twice. It's a purchasing concept, not a progression one — a cross-buy title can still store completely separate save files per platform. In practice the three concepts often ship together on the biggest live-service games (buy once, play together, keep your progress everywhere), which is part of why "cross-progression," "crossplay" and "cross-buy" get flattened into one idea in casual conversation even though a publisher can ship any one of them without the other two.

How it works under the hood

Most cross-progression systems follow the same basic pattern:

  1. You create or already have a publisher-level account — separate from your PSN, Xbox or Nintendo account.
  2. You link each platform login to that one account, usually through an in-game menu or the publisher's account-management website.
  3. The game checks that account, not the console, for your save data whenever you load in — so whichever platform you're on, it pulls the same profile.
  4. Some systems require you to pick a "primary" or "active" profile if more than one linked platform already has progress on it, since the game can't merge two separate characters into one automatically.

That last point matters: cross-progression almost never merges two existing save files. If you've played 200 hours on PS5 and then link a Steam account that already has its own character, most games will make you choose one as the account going forward — the other gets archived, not combined.

Which major games support cross-progression right now

Here's where things stand for the games people search for most, based on each publisher's own support documentation:

GamePlatforms coveredLinking accountNotes
FortnitePS5/PS4, Xbox, PC, Switch, mobileEpic Games accountNearly everything carries over; V-Bucks are the exception and stay tied to the platform where they were bought.
Call of Duty (Black Ops 6 / Warzone)PS5/PS4, Xbox, PC (Battle.net/Steam)Activision accountRank, weapon XP, unlocks and Battle Pass progress sync; CoD Points stay on the platform where they were purchased.
Apex LegendsPC, PS5/PS4, Xbox, Switch/Switch 2EA accountProgress is permanently tied to one EA account; it cannot be moved to a different EA account later.
Destiny 2PS5/PS4, Xbox, PC (Steam)Bungie.net Cross SaveYou designate one "Active Account"; some older expansion entitlements don't transfer with it.
Marvel RivalsPS5, Xbox, PC (Steam/Epic), NetEase Loading BayIn-game account linking (added Season 5)One primary character spans all linked platforms, but competitive rank and leaderboard position stay separate per platform.
Helldivers 2PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC — crossplay onlyNot applicableNo cross-progression system exists; progress stays on the platform where you earned it.

The pattern across every supported title: the account you link to, not the console you own, is the actual source of truth.

The exact steps differ, but the shape is consistent:

  • Fortnite: make sure every console/PC/mobile login signs into the same Epic Games account (via Epic's own cross-progression help article), not a fresh one created on each platform.
  • Call of Duty: create or sign into one Activision account and connect it the first time you go online on each platform; Activision Support's crossplay and cross-progression FAQ confirms progress follows whichever Activision account you're logged into.
  • Apex Legends: link each platform (including Steam, via the EA app) to a single EA Account, per EA Help's Apex Legends Cross Progression page — do this before you've built up progress on more than one platform, since the link is permanent.
  • Destiny 2: go to Bungie.net, open the Cross Save setup wizard, authenticate your PlayStation, Xbox and Steam logins, then choose which linked account's characters become your single Active Account.
  • Marvel Rivals: in-game, go to Settings → Other → Account Binding (or My Account → Connections on the website), per the official Account Cross-Progression Q&A, link the other platform, and pick a primary character if both accounts already have one.

In every case, link accounts before you've invested a lot of time on a second platform — unlinking and relinking later is where most of the "I lost my progress" horror stories online actually come from.

Common gotchas

A few recurring traps show up across almost every game that offers cross-progression:

  • Premium currency usually doesn't move. V-Bucks and CoD Points are the two biggest examples — content you bought with them is yours everywhere once purchased, but the currency balance itself stays on the platform where you paid for it.
  • Linking can be permanent, or come with a cooldown. Apex Legends ties your progress to an EA account for good. Marvel Rivals imposes a 180-day cooldown before you can re-bind a platform you've unlinked. Read the fine print before you link.
  • Competitive rank often doesn't sync even when everything else does. Marvel Rivals' own account-linking FAQ is explicit that rank and leaderboard placement are tracked separately per platform, even though your cosmetics and character are shared.
  • Some content doesn't follow you. Bungie's own Cross Save guide notes that certain older Destiny 2 expansion entitlements don't transfer between platforms even after you've linked them.
  • Crossplay existing is not evidence of cross-progression. Helldivers 2 is the textbook case — full crossplay, zero cross-progression — and it's the single most common assumption people get wrong when searching for this topic.
  • "Partial" cross-progression is common. A game can sync your campaign and cosmetics but not your currency, or sync everything except competitive standing — always check a title's own support page rather than assuming "supports cross-progression" means "supports all of it."
  • Family or household plans can complicate things. On some platforms, progress tied to a shared family account or child profile behaves differently from a standard account during linking — if you're on a managed or family plan, check the platform's own account-linking requirements before you start, since the account doing the linking needs to be the one actually playing.
  • Logging into the wrong account first can cost you your unlocks. Several Fortnite and Apex Legends guides note that if a console is linked to the wrong Epic or EA account, you'll see someone else's (or a blank) locker rather than your own — always double-check which account you're signed into before you start playing on a new platform.

Games that don't (fully) support it

Helldivers 2 remains the highest-profile current example of a crossplay game with no cross-progression system — Arrowhead has crossplay running across PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, but a Helldiver's loadout, unlocked Stratagems and Super Credits are specific to the platform you earned them on. More broadly, plenty of smaller or single-platform-first live-service games either haven't built the feature yet or only support it between a subset of platforms (PC and one console, say, but not a third). If a specific game isn't in the table above, the safest move is to check that publisher's own account or support page before assuming either way — don't take a crossplay badge on a store page as proof that progression syncs too.

What's next: should you bother linking your accounts?

If you already play one of the supported games on more than one platform — or think you might switch, say from PS5 to a PC build or a Switch 2 — linking accounts early is almost always worth doing, precisely because unlinking later is where people lose access to characters or have to pick a "winner" between two separate saves. The practical checklist: confirm the specific game actually supports cross-progression (not just crossplay) on its own support page, link your accounts to one central profile before you've built up serious progress on a second platform, and don't assume your premium currency balance is coming with you — budget it per platform instead. Expect more games to add this over the next year or two as players increasingly own a console, a Steam library and a Switch 2 at the same time; account-based progression is becoming the default expectation for any live-service shooter, not a bonus feature.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between cross-progression and crossplay?

Crossplay lets you play with people on other platforms; cross-progression carries your save, unlocks and currency between platforms. A game can have either without the other — Helldivers 2 has crossplay but no cross-progression, for example.

Do I need to link my accounts to get cross-progression?

Yes. Nearly every cross-progression system works by linking your PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam or Epic login to one central publisher account (an Epic Games account, Activision account, EA account or Bungie.net profile), which is where your actual save data lives.

Does my in-game currency carry over too?

Usually not fully. Fortnite's V-Bucks and Call of Duty's CoD Points both stay tied to the platform where you bought them, even though content purchased with that currency is unlocked everywhere once you own it.

Which major games currently support cross-progression?

Fortnite, Call of Duty (Black Ops 6/Warzone), Apex Legends, Destiny 2 and, as of Season 5, Marvel Rivals all support it through official account-linking systems. Helldivers 2 does not.

Can I undo an account link later?

Sometimes, but not always cleanly. Marvel Rivals imposes a 180-day cooldown before you can re-bind an unlinked platform, and Apex Legends' link to an EA account is permanent, so it's worth linking carefully the first time.

Does Helldivers 2 have cross-progression?

No. Helldivers 2 supports crossplay across PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, but there is no system for carrying your Helldiver, Stratagems or Super Credits between platforms.
